  1. 1829-1896. British painter, a founder member
  2. of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) in
  3. 1848. By the late 1850s he had dropped out of
  4. the PRB, and his style became more fluent and
  5. less detailed. One of his PRB works, Christ
  6. in the House of His Parents 1850 (Tate
  7. Gallery, London), caused an outcry on its
  8. first showing, since its realistic detail was
  9. considered unfitting to the sacred subject.
  10. Later works include sentimental
  11. child-studies, such as The Boyhood of Raleigh
  12. 1870 (Tate Gallery, London) and Bubbles 1886
  13. (a poster for Pears soap) and portraits. He
  14. was elected president of the Royal Academy in
  15. 1896.
