1829-1896. British painter, a founder member
of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood (PRB) in
1848. By the late 1850s he had dropped out of
the PRB, and his style became more fluent and
less detailed. One of his PRB works, Christ
in the House of His Parents 1850 (Tate
Gallery, London), caused an outcry on its
first showing, since its realistic detail was
considered unfitting to the sacred subject.
Later works include sentimental
child-studies, such as The Boyhood of Raleigh
1870 (Tate Gallery, London) and Bubbles 1886
(a poster for Pears soap) and portraits. He
was elected president of the Royal Academy in
1896.
